xGPS Module User Guide

This page has the aim to present how to use the xGPS Module. Please read this entire page before trying to do anything.

1. Hardware connection

Before you can use your xGPS Module with your iPhone 2G or iPod Touch, you have to connect it to your device. In this document, the "device" word is refering to your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Due to a problem in some iPhone or iPod Touch it has been reported that it is better to lock your device (using the top button) and then to connect the xGPS Module by using the black connector and plugging it in the bottom of the device (where you normally plug the iPhone / iPod Touch USB Cable).

When the xGPS Module is connected to an iPhone, it may tell you that "this accessory is not designed for the iPhone" and ask you if you want to switch to the Airplane mode. Just ignore this message by pressing No.

2. Running mode

The xGPS Module can run in two different modes: Normal mode, and Upgrade mode. THe first one is the one you will use everyday for using the GPS and for getting your position. The last one (Upgrade Mode) is only here to do a firmware upgrade of the xGPS Module.

To know in which mode the xGPS Module is, you have to observe the tiny green light located on the top of the xGPS Module. In normal operation, when you connect the device, the green light should turn it on for about 2 seconds and then flash two times. It means that the device has started in the normal mode and it is ready to work with our softwares. If the green light is always turned on, it means that your xGPS Module is in Upgrade Mode. If it is not voluntary, just unplug and replug the xGPS Module cable into your iPhone or iPod Touch.

In normal mode, the green light can also be used to determine if the GPS is turned on or not. If the gps is activated the green light will flash once every 5 seconds.

With some iPhone or iPod Touch, the device may not start (no green light is turning on). To solve this problem, unplug the xGPS Module connector and just lock your iPhone or iPod Touch as stated above, wait for 10 seconds, then replug it. Go to your home screen and launch the xGPS Util software (available here). Then the xGPS Module should start working.

3. Getting your position

Once the device has started correctly (as stated above), you can use any of our softwares (xGPS Util or the xGPS) to display your position or to manage the xGPS Module.

To get your position with xGPS Util, launch it from your Home screen. The Enable GPS button should then appear. Just tap on it and wait for your position to be displayed.

Sometimes it can takes up to 3-4 minutes to get your position (especially on the first time your plug in the xGPS Module). Be sure to be outside in a clear sky position (without too many buildings around) to have the best and fastest results.
